Starting psychiatric care can bring a lot of questions, and we want to make the process as clear as possible. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about working with Sam Burress PMHNP at Rockdale Mental Health.
Do you accept insurance?
Rockdale Mental Health is a direct-pay (cash pay) practice and does not bill insurance. This allows for greater flexibility, privacy, and control over care. Superbills can be provided upon request for patients who wish to seek out-of-network reimbursement.
Do you offer telehealth appointments only?
Yes. All visits are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant video sessions for adults physically located in Washington State or Iowa at the time of their appointment.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can request an appointment directly through our online portal or by completing the contact form on this website. Once we review your request, we’ll send a secure link to complete intake forms and schedule your first session.
Do you prescribe controlled substances?
At this time, Rockdale Mental Health focuses on safe, evidence-based treatment options that do not involve controlled substances. Most of my patients find effective relief from anxiety, depression, ADHD, or mood symptoms using non-controlled medications and therapy-informed approaches.
If, during your evaluation or our time working together, it appears that a controlled medication (for example, a stimulant or benzodiazepine) may be appropriate, I’ll discuss options openly and help you plan next steps. This may include coordinating with a collaborating provider or assisting you in establishing care with a clinician who can manage those prescriptions. If you are in immediate need of a controlled substance (i.e. an existing medication that needs refilled), you would be better served in an in-person practice.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your initial evaluation is a 40-minute visit focused on understanding your symptoms, history, and goals. Together, we’ll create a treatment plan that may include medication management, therapy coordination, or lifestyle recommendations.
How often will I need follow-up appointments?
Follow-up frequency varies by patient and condition. Most patients are seen every 2–4 weeks initially, with visits spaced farther apart once treatment is stable. You or your provider can request longer visits if needed.

What if I need urgent help or am in crisis?
Rockdale Mental Health does not provide emergency or crisis services. If you are in danger or need immediate help, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. You can also contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for free, 24/7 support.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards, as well as HSA and FSA cards, through our secure patient portal.
Can I transfer care from another provider?
Yes. Many patients transition care from previous psychiatrists or primary care providers. Bringing prior records or medication lists to your first appointment helps streamline the process.
Do you treat patients outside of Iowa or Washington?
At this time, Rockdale Mental Health serves patients physically located in Iowa or Washington State only. We plan to expand to additional states in the future.
